Studded Tires
Winter tire studs are designed to be installed on studdable winter tires, and work to supplement traction in select winter conditions.
Studdable tires are usually sold without studs. They must be acquired and installed separately.
Winter studs have a big diameter cylindrical base that is rooted in the tire tread and a tiny tungsten carbide button that stretches from the stud’s “effective” bottom. There are also hard rubber studs available.
Once mounted, the stud’s stud pin stretches approximately 1/32 “beyond the tire floor layer and operates to pierce icy roadways to provide additional traction. Think of the studs as punching and clawing into cold precipitation under wheel rotation.
Alternatively, some off-road truck studs have a screw design that lodges them into the tire tread.
Can all tires have studs?
Only studdable winter tires can have studs installed. These tires have been engineered with preset locations (holes) for the studs. Do not attempt to stud regular tires.
How are winter studs installed?
Each stud is placed separately into preset holes with a “stud gun.” On studdable patterns, the stud gaps are obviously noticeable.
What are the advantages of studs?
Studded winter tires have a demonstrated benefit over studless quality: Studded tires offer better traction on cold and hard-packed snowy streets.
Pros of Studded Tires
- Studded tires create a stable driving experience in challenging conditions.
- Navigate inclines safely while limiting speeds during descent.
- Studs allow you to handle severe winter weather conditions.
- Won’t damage your vehicle.
- Made from tungsten carbide.
Cons of Studded Tires
- Creates extra noise when you are driving on dry pavement.
- You must maintain two sets of tires.
- Studded tires cost slightly more per unit than regular tires.
- Not all studded tires are created at the factory. Ours are!
- All four of your tires should be studded tires.
Are studdable winter tires the “right” choice?
Studies demonstrate once again that a studded tire works best on snow while a studless offers the finest handling and traction on both snow-covered and dry pavement when the temperature is below zero.

Winter Tires FAQ
We now have an FAQ list that we hope will help you answer some of the more common questions.
When should I change my winter tires in Calgary?
We recommend switching once the temperature consistently falls below 7 degrees. That is the temperature at which winter tires begin to outperform summer and all-season tires in terms of braking and grip. Usually around October 1st.
How much do winter tires cost?
Winter tires cost $80 to $200 per tire.
Including a set of new rims, you can expect to pay $800 to $1500 for a midsize car. However, you will find several tire promotions available all year that offer good discounts and you may qualify for insurance rebates by using winter tires (safety).
What are the disadvantages of snow tires?
They should only be driven in the winter. Driving with snow tires on all year can damage both the tire and the road, resulting in potholes and cracked roads. Poor Handling – While snow tires provide excellent braking and grip, they do not handle as well as all-season tires.
How many years do winter tires last?
Winter tires are made of rubber that retains its elasticity at lower temperatures, but this does not imply that they will wear out faster than other tires. Winter tires, according to manufacturers, should last around six seasons.
How often should you check the air in your tires?
How fast can I drive with snow tires?
Car Salon recommends that drivers not exceed 120 kph when driving a mid-sized vehicle with snow tires. Because the tires are designed to provide traction in icy or snowy conditions, driving at highway speeds can damage the wheelbase and significantly reduce fuel economy.
Do snow tires help on black ice?
Truth be told, the only way you can obtain a semblance of safety while driving on black ice is with studded snow tires. … Studded tires can also cause issues on regular pavement. Without a rubber contact patch gripping the road, studded tires can be as slick as black ice.
When should you remove snow tires?
You should remove winter tires once winter is done in your area. Of course, you cannot predict that last rogue snowstorm, but consider removing winter tires when temperatures are consistently above 7° C.
Are winter tires good in rain?
FACT: Winter tires handle very poorly in warm or rainy weather. Since winter tires are made of softer rubber compounds, they are noticeably “squishy” during warm weather. … More importantly, snow tires can be dangerous on wet roads at highway speeds. Nearly all brands have very poor wet-road braking performance.
Do you need special tires for snow?
It’s a common misconception that winter tires are only necessary when the roads are covered in snow or ice. That is simply not true. The best snow tires will provide good traction in all cold weather conditions, wet or dry.
